NELSON E. TIMKEN     

  Nelson, a lifelong resident of Queens County, attended Columbia College and Queens College, City University of New York, from which he received a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in Political Science in 1985. He received his Juris Doctor degree from St. John’s University School of Law in 1988, and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1988, the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York in 1989, and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in 1990.

     Nelson practiced in the private sector as a litigation attorney in the areas of plaintiffs and defense negligence for six years, from 1988-1994, handling professional negligence, products liability, labor law, premises liability and insurance-coverage matters. He was employed by an insurance carrier, in which capacity he investigated claims, made coverage determinations, issued coverage positions, analyzed legal issues, and supervised in-house and outside counsel in defending and settling negligence cases, primarily premises liability matters. From1994, when he left the private sector, until present, Nelson works for the New York State Unified Court System, serving as Court Attorney to Civil Court Judges assigned to the New York City Criminal Court, and as Principal Law Clerk to Supreme Court Justices in the New York State Supreme Court, Queens County, Civil, Guardianship and Criminal Terms.

     Nelson is a prolific writer. On behalf of the judges for whom he worked, Nelson drafted numerous published decisions on novel issues of law. In addition, he penned scholarly legal articles for the New York Law Journal, the New York State Bar Association Torts, Insurance & Compensation Law Journal, the Queens County Bar Association Bulletin, and the Times Ledger (a local Queens newspaper). He lectured on various topics for the New York State Bar Association, the Queens County Bar Association, and the Alumni Association of St. John’s University School of Law. He is especially proud of winning Second Prize in the New York Law Journal’s 4th Annual Fiction Writing Competition in 2005 for his story entitled "The Servant of Justice."

     Nelson is associate dean of the Queens County Bar Association Academy of Law and vice-chair of its Continuing Legal Education Committee, belongs to the New York State Bar Association Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law section, and the Alumni Association of St. John's University School of Law. He teaches legal medicine as an adjunct instructor in the Queens College Continuing Education-Paralegal Studies Program. Nelson is a third-degree member of Francis Lewis Lodge #273, Free and Accepted Masons in Whitestone. He serves as an altar server, lector, and Eucharistic minister at Zion Episcopal Church in Douglaston. Nelson is married to Elizabeth, also an attorney, and they have three children attending public schools in Queens County.

         Politically, Nelson was a member of the Queens County Line Democratic Association, from 1989 to 1990 before re-districting split the club into three assembly districts (24, 26 and 33) in 1990. Since 1990, he has been a member of The Jefferson Democratic Club of Flushing, serving as its recording secretary until he became employed by the Unified Court System in 1994. He is also a charter male member of The Eleanor Roosevelt Regular Democratic Club. His wife, Elizabeth MacEwen-Timken, is a law clerk to a Supreme Court Justice in Queens County.  They reside in Bellerose Manor, with their three children, Shannon, and twins, Patrick and Caitlin.  

         Nelson has a strong interest in computers, the Internet and Web Development.  He knows HTML, JavaScript, FrontPage & PaintShop Pro, all of which are used to build and maintain this site.  He also is skilled in the setup and use of word processing packages such as Word and WordPerfect, legal research tools such as Lexis and Westlaw, time management and billing programs such as TimeSlips and TimeMatters.
